Songstress hovered over the planet as the Gatestone continued to move closer to Wisconsin. Grant’s settlement was going to be receiving it soon and the world was already changing.

“Do you think he’ll defend it?” she asked.

System shrugged. “It’s hard to say. He has the power, but he needs the other clans. The raids are too easy for him.”

Smirking, she glanced down at the settlement. “That’s okay. I have something different planned for the orcs and elves.”

“Oh?” System asked. “Does this have anything to do with Valor’s war on the undead?”

“I might be helping her with a small portion of that problem. You know he is responsible for the latest uprising. I have to remind him that I’m not to be messed with. He already influenced Gabe’s trial once.”

“Taking his undead won’t change anything.”

Tapping her lips, Songstress shrugged. “Maybe you are right. Maybe you are wrong. But he is not playing within the rules anymore. I need to help Grant and Gabe get ready for the job I have for them. Grant will be able to strike down the undead easily enough, but without Gabe, he will not be able to fight to his greatest potential.”

“Why pair them together?”

Watching the Gatestone for several long seconds, she debated how to answer. “Gabe has unlimited untapped potential when it comes to his ballads, but he needs someone to shelter him. Someone with the experience to guide him through the darkness and the recesses of the world. Grant is that man. How many humans have you ever seen live for a thousand years in an apocalypse without the true system?”

“One,” System admitted.

“Exactly. Out of hundreds of timelines and failed experiments, we found one man that stood up to the test. Grant had hundreds of times to get it right, and yet only succeeded once. That’s all I needed. Just that once was enough for my plans.”

“You need a partnership with him.”

Nodding, Songstress checked the raid. “I’ll talk with him again soon. He won’t ask for much, but unlike Gabe, he will need a mutual agreement. Grant is too strong and experienced to be taken lightly. I’ll also need to prepare Gabe soon.”

“Let Gabe finish the second trial first. I enjoy watching him get stronger. Did you see Silver knock him out?”

Smiling, Songstress nodded. “He deserved it. But Gabe and Silver are still too weak. Once Yew joins them, I’m going to have to find a way to balance their growth. Grant won’t slow down for them.”

“I’ll work on it,” System offered.

“I know you will.”
